A U.S. Department of Justice analysis of recidivism rates in 24 states concluded that 82 percent of individuals released from state prisons were rearrested at least once during the 10 years following release. Within one year of release, 43 percent of formerly incarcerated people were rearrested.

The U.S. also leads the world in recidivism

It works! As of October 2023, Tennessee's recidivism rate was 29.6%, which the Tennessee Department of Corrections called a 10-year low. The department also noted that access to education and employment are important for people trying to start fresh after prison.
